DeviceNet and ControlNet to EtherNet/IP Migration
DeviceNet and ControlNet still run many machines and process units, but spare parts and diagnostics are getting harder. TDL moves I/O, drives and controllers to EtherNet/IP, plans the cut-over around the plant's shutdown and keeps the process logic unchanged unless the plant asks for improvements.
What TDL does
Survey and network design
Existing nodes, cabling and traffic surveyed; new EtherNet/IP architecture with managed switches and DLR rings where availability matters.
I/O and drives
DeviceNet I/O and drives replaced with EtherNet/IP adapters, POINT I/O and PowerFlex drives.
ControlNet to EtherNet/IP
ControlNet links between controllers, remote racks and HMIs replaced with EtherNet/IP, including redundant networks.
DH+ and DH-485
Older DH+ and DH-485 links to PLC-5, SLC 500 and HMIs moved to EtherNet/IP.
Program changes
I/O mapping, drive profiles and messaging updated in the controller program, tested before the shutdown.
Cut-over
Installation and start-up within the planned stop, with updated drawings and backups handed over.

EtherNet/IP networks on Stratix managed switches, with redundancy by DLR rings, PRP and HSR. VLAN segmentation, firewalls and secure remote access following IEC 62443 zone and conduit principles. Interfaces to third-party systems over Modbus and OPC UA.
PLC & Control System Migration
Allen-Bradley PLC-5, SLC 500 and MicroLogix, Siemens S5 and HIMA systems upgraded to ControlLogix and CompactLogix; ControlNet and DeviceNet to EtherNet/IP; older HMI/SCADA (RSView32, Citect, PanelView) to FactoryTalk View and PanelView Plus 7. Drive upgrades: DC drives to PowerFlex, legacy servo drives to Kinetix. Site survey, code conversion, FAT/SAT and planned cut-over, onshore and on offshore platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the controller have to be replaced?
Not always. Newer ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers can stay and receive EtherNet/IP modules; older controllers are often upgraded in the same project, as on the Crown Da Nang body maker.
Can the migration be done in phases?
Yes. Lines or units can be moved one at a time while the remaining sections keep running, as on the P&G Dong An packing lines.
What network design does TDL use?
Managed Stratix switches, segmented by line or unit, with DLR rings or redundant networks where the process needs them.
