FLEX I/O 1794 to FLEX 5000 (5094) Migration: When to Move, Equivalent Modules, Terminal Bases, Software

TDL Industrial Automation · Last updated:

Lifecycle of each 1794 code on Rockwell's pages (read 27 October 2026), equivalent FLEX 5000 adapters and modules per 5094-RM001B, MB + RTB terminal bases, reusing wiring, controller and Studio 5000 versions, XT, diagnostics and a checklist.

Not every FLEX I/O 1794 catalog number is about to be discontinued. Per Rockwell's product pages (read 27 October 2026), the 1794-AENTR adapter and many common I/O modules such as 1794-IB16, 1794-OB16, 1794-IE8 and 1794-IF8IH are still "Active Mature". The codes that already carry a discontinued date are mainly the ControlNet and DeviceNet adapters and a few analog modules. FLEX 5000 I/O (5094) is the successor family, but it has EtherNet/IP adapters only, works only with ControlLogix 5580, CompactLogix 5380 or 5480 controllers (and their GuardLogix safety versions: GuardLogix 5580, Compact GuardLogix 5380), and needs Studio 5000 Logix Designer version 31 or later (5094-RM001B pp. 5, 14, 27).

This article summarises Rockwell's official migration guide, FLEX I/O to FLEX 5000 I/O Migration Guide (5094-RM001B, 09/2026), together with the 5094-TD001M technical data, the 5094-UM001I and 5094-UM002E user manuals and the 1794-SG002I selection guide. Page numbers in brackets refer to the publication named.

1794-OE4 End of Life 28/02/2027 5094-OF8 (Engineering Replacement)
1794-IB16, 1794-IB32, 1794-OB16, 1794-OW8, 1794-IE8, 1794-IF8IH, 1794-OF8IH, 1794-IT8, 1794-IRT8 Active Mature — Only "Replacement Available"
1794-TB3 (terminal base) Active Mature — None given

For 1794-ACN15, 1794-ACNR15, 1794-ADN (22/10/2026) and 1794-IE8H (31/03/2026) the discontinued date has passed, but the pages still show "End of Life"; 1794-OE8H has already moved to "Discontinued". 5094-AENTR and 5094-IF8IH are "Active". Per 5094-RM001B (p. 9), "Active Mature" means the product is fully supported but a newer family exists; "End of Life" means a discontinued date is announced and the product can be ordered until that date; "Discontinued" means it is no longer manufactured. Status changes over time; check the specific code in the end-of-life lookup or on Rockwell's page before ordering.

When to migrate

  • ControlNet or DeviceNet adapters past their discontinued date. FLEX 5000 has no ControlNet or DeviceNet adapter; to use FLEX 5000 the network must first move to EtherNet/IP, and the controller needs an EtherNet/IP module such as 1756-EN2TR (5094-RM001B pp. 14, 26). For ControlNet, Rockwell points to the CNET-RM001 guide.
  • Analog modules that already have a date. 1794-IE8H has a replacement inside the 1794 family (1794-IF8IH), so the rack can stay; 1794-OE8H and 1794-OE4 are pointed straight to FLEX 5000 on Rockwell's pages.
  • EtherNet/IP racks running 1794-AENTR and "Active Mature" modules. There is no deadline yet; the sensible time is the next controller upgrade, because FLEX 5000 does not run with ControlLogix 5570 or CompactLogix 5370 (5094-RM001B p. 27).
  • When new features are needed. FLEX 5000 offers 1 Gbps EtherNet/IP, DLR on every adapter, PRP from firmware 4.011, runtime reconfiguration and up to 16 modules per adapter (5094-RM001B pp. 12, 15).

Equivalent adapters

Common catches:

  • No replacement: 1794-IV16, 1794-IV32 (FLEX 5000 has no sourcing inputs), 1794-OV16, 1794-OV32, 1794-IG16, 1794-IC16, 1794-IH16, 1794-OC16, 1794-IP4, 1794-IF4ICFXT (pp. 16–20).
  • Combo modules such as 1794-IE4XOE2, 1794-IE8XOE4 and 1794-IB10XOB6 must be split into two FLEX 5000 modules, using extra slots (pp. 16, 18).
  • Diagnostic modules 1794-IB16D, 1794-OB16D and 1794-OB4D have no FLEX 5000 equivalent with diagnostics (p. 16).
  • Isolation: among FLEX 5000 analog modules, only 5094-IF8IH and 5094-OF8IH are isolated; there is also the isolated relay module 5094-OW8I (p. 15), and 5094-IJ2I is listed as an isolated-frequency input module (p. 20). 1794-IT8 and 1794-IR8 are isolated to 850 V, 5094-IY8 to 250 V; 5094-IY8 does not accept 3-wire current/voltage devices (pp. 62–63).
  • Analog output load: 1794-OE4 drives a 15…750 Ω current load (1794-SG002I p. 43), 5094-OF8 a maximum of 500 Ω in current mode (5094-TD001M p. 39). High-burden 4–20 mA loops need rechecking.

Terminal bases and reusing the wiring

1794 terminal bases do not take 5094 modules. A FLEX 5000 terminal base is two parts ordered separately: the 5094-MB mounting base and a removable terminal block (RTB); modules ship without a base (5094-RM001B pp. 20, 22; 5094-TD001M p. 111). An RTB ending in S is spring-type, without S screw-type. Choose the RTB by module (5094-TD001M p. 111):

FLEX 5000 module RTB
5094-IB16, 5094-OB8, 5094-OB16, 5094-IF8, 5094-OF8, 5094-HSC 5094-RTB3 / 5094-RTB3S
5094-IY8 5094-RTB3T / 5094-RTB3TS (with CJC)
5094-IF8IH, 5094-OF8IH 5094-RTB3I / 5094-RTB3IS
5094-OW8I 5094-RTB3W / 5094-RTB3WS
5094-IB32 / 5094-OB32 5094-RTB32V / 5094-RTB32C (and S versions)
5094-IA16, 5094-IM8, 5094-OA16 5094-RTB3AC / 5094-RTB3ACS

About the existing wiring:

  • Wires have to be moved by hand from the old base to the new RTB; if existing wires are too short to reach the new positions, the job gets much harder (5094-RM001B p. 47). Chapter 3 has side-by-side diagrams for 12 module pairs (pp. 47–60). For example, a 3-wire RTD on 5094-IY8 no longer ties RTD- to the L terminal as on 1794-IR8 (p. 58).
  • Maximum wire size stays 2.5 mm² on both systems (p. 13).
  • Shields: the 1794 base has dedicated shield terminals; FLEX 5000 needs a 5094-STB shield bar, typically for every analog module and 5094-HSC. The bar adds about 33 mm to the base height (p. 26).
  • Field power: both systems jumper terminals 33→16 (common) and 51→34 (DC+); FLEX 5000 offers the 4-prong 5094-SAJMPR jumper, for screw-type RTBs only (p. 25).
  • Size: the footprint is about the same, but FLEX 5000 modules are 10–30 mm taller (p. 13). The 5094-CE05/CE10 bank cables replace 1794-CE1/CE3; the connector is about 12.7 mm wider and the cable orientation differs (p. 24). The last base needs a 5094-ECR end cap; empty slots take a 5094-N2 cover (pp. 25, 29).
  • Power: FLEX 5000 needs no separate power supply module, but it may draw more SA current than the FLEX I/O backplane did; recheck the load on the existing 24 V supply (pp. 23, 26).

Controllers and Studio 5000 versions

  • Studio 5000 Logix Designer 31.00.00 or later and RSLinx Classic 4.10.00 for the FLEX 5000 Add-on Profiles (5094-RM001B p. 5).
  • Controllers: ControlLogix 5580, CompactLogix 5380 and 5480 (and their GuardLogix safety versions: GuardLogix 5580, Compact GuardLogix 5380) (pp. 5, 27). SIL levels and safety values must be determined by a competent engineer per IEC 61511 for each project. Systems on ControlLogix 5570 or CompactLogix 5370 must replace the controller first, per 1756-RM100 (p. 27).
  • Minimum versions from Table 4 (pp. 27–28): standard modules v31 with 5580/5380, v32 with CompactLogix 5480; HART modules 5094-IF8IH/OF8IH v32.02 with ControlLogix 5580 and CompactLogix 5380; ControlLogix redundancy v33; 5094-IJ2I v34.
  • A redundant controller cannot use Listen Only or Input Only connections to FLEX 5000, so this I/O cannot be shared with other controllers (p. 28).
  • The program must change: Rockwell treats this migration as an engineered solution, and every reference to FLEX I/O must be replaced with FLEX 5000 (p. 29). Analog data changes from INT (0…22,000, 0…65,535, ±32,767) to REAL, scaled 0…100 % by default; the RPI range changes from 2…750 ms to 0.2…750 ms (p. 29). Slot numbering changes from 0–7 to 1–8 or 1–16 (p. 16).
  • Integrated Architecture Builder (IAB) has a migration wizard that builds the BOM and flags modules without a replacement (p. 31).

Diagnostics

  • 5094-IF8 has open-wire detection, notch and digital filters, which 1794-IE8 lacks; 5094-IF8IH adds short-circuit detection and internal loop power (5094-RM001B p. 62). Open-wire detection must be enabled in the module configuration (5094-UM002E p. 41).
  • Analog modules report data quality through I.Chxx.Fault (do not use for control: open wire, under/over range, field power loss…) and I.Chxx.Uncertain tags (5094-UM002E pp. 28–29). Digital modules have I.Ptxx.Fault and I.Ptxx.Uncertain (5094-UM001I p. 36), plus field power loss detection down to the point (p. 40).
  • Logix Designer reads each module's serial number, firmware, faults and diagnostic data; check firmware in the PCDC before commissioning (5094-UM001I pp. 36–37).

Reading module connection fault codes in Logix Designer is covered in the article ControlLogix I/O module fault 16#0204, 16#0203.

A TDL maintenance case

In the making areas of FMCG plants that TDL maintains, FLEX I/O 1794 and FLEX 5000 (5094-AENTR, 5094-IF8IH) run side by side in the same control system.

Checklist before migrating

  1. List every 1794 code per rack (adapter, modules, bases, power supply, bank cables) and look up each code's lifecycle status.
  2. Identify the network: ControlNet, DeviceNet, Remote I/O or PROFIBUS racks need an EtherNet/IP plan first.
  3. Check the controller and Logix Designer version against Table 4 of 5094-RM001B; if it is a 5570 or 5370, add the controller replacement to the scope.
  4. Map modules using pp. 16–20; flag codes with no replacement, combo modules, channel-isolated modules and diagnostic modules.
  5. Choose the 5094-MB and the right RTB for each module; add 5094-STB, 5094-SAJMPR, 5094-ECR, 5094-N2 and 5094-CE cables.
  6. Measure wire lengths and cabinet height; label every wire before removal.
  7. Recalculate SA current and the 24 V supply load; check current-loop load on analog outputs.
  8. Update the program: new tags, new slot numbers, REAL scaling, RPI, and any logic that reads the old diagnostic bits.
  9. Check switches and cables if running 1 Gbps, DLR or PRP.

Frequently asked questions

Is all FLEX I/O 1794 being discontinued?

No. Per Rockwell's pages read on 27 October 2026, 1794-AENTR and modules such as 1794-IB16, 1794-OB16, 1794-IE8 and 1794-IF8IH are still "Active Mature". Codes with a discontinued date include 1794-AENT (30/09/2028), 1794-ACN15, 1794-ACNR15 and 1794-ADN (all 22/10/2026) and 1794-OE4 (28/02/2027); 1794-OE8H is already "Discontinued".

What replaces the 1794-AENT?

Rockwell's page names 1794-AENTR as the functional replacement, still in the FLEX I/O family. If you move to FLEX 5000, 5094-RM001B points to 5094-AENTR (8 modules) or 5094-AEN2TR (16 modules).

How do 1794-ACN15 or 1794-ACNR15 racks move to FLEX 5000?

FLEX 5000 has EtherNet/IP adapters only, so the ControlNet network must first move to EtherNet/IP, then 5094-AENTR is used (5094-RM001B p. 14). Rockwell's pages for these two codes say Engineering Replacement without naming a catalog number.

Can the old terminal bases and wiring be reused?

The 1794 bases cannot be reused; FLEX 5000 needs a 5094-MB plus the right RTB. Existing wires must be moved by hand to the new RTB, and 5094-RM001B notes this is harder if the old wires are too short (p. 47).

Which Studio 5000 version does FLEX 5000 need?

At least 31.00.00 with ControlLogix 5580 and CompactLogix 5380; v32 with CompactLogix 5480; v32.02 for HART modules with ControlLogix 5580 and CompactLogix 5380; v33 with ControlLogix redundancy (5094-RM001B pp. 27–28).
