Legacy HMI/SCADA migration to FactoryTalk, AVEVA or Ignition
Migrate legacy HMI/SCADA — RSView32, PanelBuilder32, older Wonderware InTouch versions, Citect and other vendors' HMI/SCADA — to FactoryTalk View / Optix, AVEVA or Ignition: inventory, conversion or rebuild, testing with operations, then cutover.
Scope
- Inventory of the running system: versions, licenses, tag count, screens, scripts, drivers, operating system
- Capture of every screen and export of the tag list and alarm list as the specification
- Choice of target platform and approach: upgrade within the same product family, import with the vendor's tools, conversion with TDL's conversion tools, or rebuild
- Conversion with the vendor's tools (same product family) or TDL's conversion tools (across vendors), or rebuild; each screen checked against the captures
- Rework of what the tools cannot convert: scripts, trends, alarms, communication drivers
- Testing of the application with operations before cutover
- Cutover and trial run within a shutdown window set by the plant
- Handover of project files, documentation and backups
Not included
- PLC logic changes beyond what is needed for the new HMI/SCADA to work correctly
- Replacement of servers, network or electrical panels — quoted separately if needed
What the plant prepares
- Original HMI/SCADA project files and existing licenses available
- Access to the running system to capture screens and export tags

Discontinued HMI/SCADA software keeps running, but no further licenses can be bought, it is hard to run on newer operating systems, and it struggles to meet security or data-connectivity requirements. How much of the conversion is automatic varies widely from one platform pair to another: RSView32 can be imported into FactoryTalk View SE (FTALK-QR004C pp. 3, 17–19), PanelBuilder32 applications can be imported into FactoryTalk View ME (2711P-AP006F pp. 42–48), and Citect SCADA is upgraded within the same line as AVEVA Plant SCADA; moving between two different vendors, on the other hand, has no vendor import path: the application is converted with TDL's conversion tools and then reworked by hand, or rebuilt. That is why an inventory and a trial conversion should come first, to establish which parts convert automatically and which have to be done by hand, before the scope is confirmed. The cutover plan should include a fallback to the old system, agreed with the plant beforehand.
Lifecycle status of each software product and which target platform to choose: see Legacy HMI/SCADA: what to replace it with. For replacing PanelView Plus 6 with Plus 7 specifically (same FactoryTalk View ME): the PanelView Plus 6 → Plus 7 upgrade package.
