Allen-Bradley high-speed counter modules compared: 1734-VHSC, 1769-HSC, 1794-VHSC and 5069-HSC2XOB4

TDL Industrial Automation · Last updated:

Four Allen-Bradley high-speed counter families all count to 1 MHz but differ in counters, input voltage, outputs and setup. Specs compared, lifecycle per Rockwell pages, when HSC is needed, preset, rollover, filter and wiring mistakes, and a replacement checklist.

Allen-Bradley has four families of high-speed counter (HSC) modules that plants commonly run: 1734-VHSC5 and 1734-VHSC24 for POINT I/O, 1769-HSC for Compact I/O, 1794-VHSC for FLEX I/O, and 5069-HSC2XOB4 for Compact 5000 I/O. All four count single-phase pulses up to 1 MHz and have compare outputs that the module itself switches on count, without waiting for the PLC scan. Per Rockwell's product pages (read 27 October 2026), none of them has a discontinued date: 1734-VHSC5, 1734-VHSC24 and 5069-HSC2XOB4 are Active; 1769-HSC and 1794-VHSC are Active Mature.

Below: a comparison from Rockwell's public documents, when an HSC module beats digital inputs, common configuration mistakes, and a replacement checklist.

Counting modes. 1734-VHSC and 1794-VHSC share one set of modes: Counter (A is the pulse, B the direction), Encoder X1/X2/X4, Period/Rate, Continuous/Rate, Rate Measurement and PWM (1734-UM003C p. 7; 1794-UM010E p. 8). In Period/Rate and Continuous/Rate, accuracy falls as the Z frequency rises; Rate Measurement counts A pulses over a 10 ms…3 s sample period (1734-UM003C pp. 9–11).

1769-HSC offers Pulse/External Direction, Pulse/Internal Direction, Up and Down Pulses and X1/X2/X4. Rate comes from the time between pulses (better at low frequency) or from pulses per 1…32,767 ms cycle (better at high frequency) (1769-UM006E pp. 21, 32–33). With three counters, counters 1 and 2 can only run Pulse/Internal Direction; with four counters, all four must; counters 2 and 3 have no Z input (pp. 18, 21, 29).

5069-HSC2XOB4 offers Count/External Direction, Count/Internal Direction, Up and Down Pulse and X1/X2/X4, also measures frequency, acceleration and pulse width (instantaneous and average), has missing-pulse and zero-frequency alarms, and can trigger an event task in the controller (5069-UM006C pp. 29–30, 36–38). The hardware windows Window00…03 switch an output in less than 10 µs (p. 43).

Because the product pages name no replacement, this article does not suggest one for 1769-HSC or 1794-VHSC. When a CompactLogix 1769 system moves to CompactLogix 5380 or 5480 (see CompactLogix 1769-L3x end of life), the counter module in the Compact 5000 I/O family is 5069-HSC2XOB4. 5069-UM006C notes that it works differently from 1769-HSC; for example, the counter runs when the O.Counterxx.Hold tag is 0 instead of when the CtrnEn bit is 1 (p. 9). The module can be local or remote I/O with CompactLogix 5380/5480, but with ControlLogix 5580 only remote over EtherNet/IP; Studio 5000 Logix Designer (RSLogix 5000) v28 or later is required, depending on the controller (p. 10). Other catalog numbers: end-of-life lookup.

When an HSC module is needed instead of digital inputs

A digital input reports its state to the controller once per update cycle, so to count in the program each ON and OFF level of the pulse has to last longer than that cycle plus the input filter time. An HSC module counts in hardware, and the controller only reads the accumulated value. For example, 1734-VHSC has an RPI of 2…750 ms, default 80 ms (1734-UM003C p. 32), yet keeps counting up to 1 MHz between reads.

Use an HSC module when:

  • Pulses are fast or short: encoders on machine shafts, length measurement, pulse-output flowmeters.
  • Outputs must act on position without waiting for the program: knives, glue guns, reject gates. 1769-HSC outputs turn on within 400 µs (200 µs above 7 V) and off within 200 µs of the module's command, not counting the scan (1769-UM006E pp. 124, 126; 1769-TD006H p. 58).
  • The count must be latched on an external event: the Z input stores the count, even while counting at 1 MHz (1769-UM006E p. 30).
  • A steady frequency or speed value is needed without writing the algorithm in the PLC.

For slow pulses, such as a product sensor on a slow conveyor, digital inputs are usually enough; check the shortest pulse against the update cycle first.

Common configuration mistakes

Preset and rollover

  • 1734-VHSC and 1794-VHSC: the rollover is the number of count values, not the highest value. A setting of 1000 counts 998, 999, 0 (1734-UM003C p. 20); 360 counts 358, 359, 0 (1794-UM010E p. 25). A 360-pulse-per-revolution encoder in X1 needs 360, not 359. The preset lies in 0…16,777,215, and in Logix Designer the rollover must be larger than the preset (1734-UM003C pp. 20, 34). A rollover of zero outside PWM mode is a programming error: the PE bit sets and the module does not enter normal operation (1734-UM003C p. 16); on the 1794-VHSC the PE bit sets and the status indicator flashes green (1794-UM010E p. 52).
  • 1769-HSC: limits are set with Max/Min count. A ring counter past Max returns to Min; a linear counter stops and sets the overflow flag (1769-UM006E pp. 28–29). The preset must be greater than or equal to Min and less than Max; changing Max/Min while the counter is enabled raises a BadModConfigUpdate error (pp. 78–79). If the current count is outside Min…Max, the module loads the preset itself and sets the PresetWarning flag (p. 31).
  • 5069-HSC2XOB4: the count runs from RollunderValue to RolloverValue − 1 and then wraps around; Load and Reset on the Z input cannot be used together (5069-UM006C pp. 31, 36).

Input filters

  • 1734-VHSC starts with a default configuration that filters A, B and Z at 50 Hz (1734-UM003C p. 12). Left at the default with a fast encoder, it will miss pulses. The choices are no filter, 50 kHz, 5 kHz, 500 Hz and 50 Hz; the highest count rate needs the filter switched off. For 1734-VHSC24 in counter mode, the manual says to choose a suitable filter to avoid extra counts (pp. 7, 35).
  • 1769-HSC offers 10 µs, 500 µs, 5 ms or no filter. These are simple averaging filters: a full-amplitude signal at a frequency above the filter threshold can still turn the input on (1769-UM006E p. 20). In noisy areas, slow pulses with gentle edges can produce false counts; the manual recommends devices with differential outputs (p. 55).
  • 5069-HSC2XOB4 has separate filters for Off→On and On→Off transitions, from 0 ns to 50 ms (5069-UM006C p. 30).

Sinking/sourcing wiring

  • Inputs. 1769-HSC and 5069-HSC2XOB4 have differential inputs, so each point needs both the + and − terminals. An open-collector sinking (NPN) sensor needs a pull-up resistor if it has none inside. The maximum resistor at 5/12/24 V is 352/1382/3147 Ω for 1769-HSC and 500/2250/5250 Ω for 5069-HSC2XOB4 (1769-UM006E pp. 60–61; 5069-TD001P p. 49).
  • Outputs. All four families have sourcing outputs, so the load connects between the output and the negative side (a sinking load). 1769-HSC needs an external 5…30 V supply for its outputs, the outputs are not isolated from each other, and wiring them to AC or with reverse polarity damages the module (1769-UM006E pp. 62, 64). 1734-VHSC takes output power from the POINT I/O field power bus, 10…28.8 V (1734-UM003C p. 7; 1734-IN003K p. 12). 1794-VHSC powers each output pair separately through terminals 37/39 and 46/48 (1794-IN067E pp. 4–5). 5069-HSC2XOB4 outputs return to SA−, so the SA power bus must be DC; DC and AC modules must sit on separate SA buses split by a 5069-FPD (5069-TD001P pp. 49–50; 5069-UM006C pp. 16–17).

5 V or 24 V encoder

  • 1734-VHSC5 sees ON from 2.6 V and tolerates ±6 V maximum; 1734-VHSC24 needs at least 12.5 V for ON (1734-IN003K pp. 11–12). A 5 V line-driver encoder on a VHSC24 never reaches ON; a 24 V encoder on a VHSC5 exceeds the ±6 V maximum, and the instructions warn that an input driven above its maximum voltage may be damaged for good (p. 14).
  • 1794-VHSC has separate terminal rows: 24 V inputs on row A (terminals 0…5 and 8…13), 5 V inputs on row B (terminals 17…22 and 25…30). Never put 24 V signals on the 5 V terminals (1794-IN067E pp. 4–5).
  • 1769-HSC accepts 2.6…30 V, but above 40 °C the allowed input voltage drops, to 26.4 V at 55 °C (1769-UM006E pp. 124, 128). 5069-HSC2XOB4 accepts 3…32 V (5069-TD001P p. 51).

Cable

Use twisted-pair, individually shielded cable up to 300 m (1769-UM006E pp. 54, 59; 1794-IN067E p. 4; 5069-TD001P p. 49). For 1769-HSC, ground the shield at the module end only (1769-UM006E pp. 54, 57).

Checklist for replacing an old module

  1. Read the full catalog number and series on the label. 1734-IN003K covers series C; with ControlNet or EtherNet/IP adapters it needs Studio 5000 Logix Designer v20 or later (1734-IN003K p. 5).
  2. Record the running configuration: mode, filter, preset, rollover or Max/Min, scalar, windows or ranges, fault and Program states. 1769-HSC and 5069-HSC2XOB4 clear their counts and configuration on power loss (1769-UM006E p. 15; 5069-UM006C p. 38), so the program needs a step that restores position (preset or homing) after the swap.
  3. Match the encoder voltage to the module: VHSC5 or VHSC24, 5 V or 24 V row on the 1794 base.
  4. Set the base keyswitch: position 2 for 1734-VHSC, position 1 for 1794-VHSC (1734-IN003K p. 12; 1794-IN067E p. 4).
  5. For 1794-VHSC, apply 24 V to the base before operation, otherwise the adapter sees an empty slot; power frequency and digital modules from separate supplies (1794-UM010E pp. 17–18). For 1769-HSC, stay within four modules of the system power supply (1769-UM006E p. 48).
  6. For 5069-HSC2XOB4: rewrite the logic, because tag names and control differ from 1769-HSC; check the controller and Studio 5000 version (5069-UM006C pp. 9–10); the RTB does not ship with the module and is ordered separately (5069-TD001P p. 43).
  7. Test: watch the PE configuration-error bit (1734-IN003K p. 10), turn the shaft one slow revolution and check count and direction, watch the A/B/Z indicators, and only then let the compare outputs drive actuators.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1769-HSC still sold?

Per the Rockwell product page read on 27 October 2026, 1769-HSC is Active Mature and the page gives no discontinued date. The page carries a "Replacement Available" label, but its text names no replacement catalog number.

What is the difference between 1734-VHSC5 and 1734-VHSC24?

The input voltage: VHSC5 takes 5 V signals, sees ON from 2.6 V and tolerates ±6 V maximum; VHSC24 takes 15…24 V and needs at least 12.5 V for ON (1734-IN003K pp. 11–12). The counting modes and outputs of the two are the same.

What is the maximum frequency of Allen-Bradley HSC modules?

1734-VHSC, 1769-HSC and 1794-VHSC count up to 1 MHz in single-phase counting, 500 kHz in X2 and 250 kHz in X4 with no filter. 5069-UM006C states 1 MHz, and 4 MHz in X4 mode (p. 37).

Why does an HSC module miss pulses or count extra?

Usually because the filter does not suit the pulse frequency, for example the default 50 Hz filter of 1734-VHSC left in place (1734-UM003C p. 12), because the encoder voltage does not match the module, or because of wrong cabling and shield grounding. For 1734-VHSC24 in counter mode, the manual says to choose a suitable filter to avoid extra counts (p. 35).

What rollover value should 1734-VHSC use?

The number of count values in one cycle, because the count returns to 0 just before reaching the rollover value: a setting of 1000 counts 998, 999, 0 (1734-UM003C p. 20). A rollover of zero outside PWM mode is a configuration error (p. 16).
