Kinetix 300 and Kinetix 350 drives (Bulletin 2097) report faults differently. The Kinetix 300 (indexing drive, configured with MotionView OnBoard) shows E plus a two-digit code on its display, for example E09 or E39 (
Where to read the fault
Kinetix 300
- On a fault the display shows the code; after 30 seconds without keypad activity it alternates the IP address and the code. Normal status is diS (disabled) or run (enabled) (p. 154).
- With the push buttons (Table 65, p. 124):
FLtSscrolls the stored fault history (E0XX…E7XX, XX = fault code),buSshows DC bus voltage,Htheatsink temperature. - The red "Drive fault" indicator (D) lights on a drive fault; green "Comm activity" (E) flashes with communication (Figure 76, p. 125).
- In MotionView, "Faults" category: "Load Faults" recalls the last 15 faults, "Clear Faults" clears the present one (Table 54, p. 98).

Source: Tables 45–51, pp. 114–119; nF06: Table 60, p. 127. For F 43, attribute #2703 (read with MSG Get Attribute Single) gives the reason (p. 116). A TTL encoder losing A/B is not detected directly and usually appears as F 54 or F 55; in some cases, particularly in Torque mode, no fault is raised: the motor coasts to a stop while the axis is still enabled in Logix Designer (p. 124).
Memory module: E76 (blank module) on both drives, cleared by holding the enter key until "bUSY" to format it; a bad module is E70 on the Kinetix 300 and E38 on the Kinetix 350 (
STO faults
- Kinetix 300: E39 appears on enable when
STO-4 andSTO-6 disagree, and also when both are de-energized (STO function engaged) (Table 73, p. 163). For a mismatch, the causes listed are: loose STO wiring, header not seated, missing +24V. Reset, then run the proof test; if it persists, return the drive to Rockwell Automation (p. 164). - Kinetix 350: an active STO posts start inhibit Sc05; a proof test is required after troubleshooting (p. 101).
Check sequence
- Record the code, indicators and fault history before resetting.
- Power codes (E09, E10, F 33, F 35): read
buS, measure the AC input. - Network codes (E14, nF 01, nF06): cable, switch port, N indicator.
- Feedback and motion codes: wiring, shielding, grounding, the configured motor, then mechanics and tuning.
Clearing faults safely
Clearing a servo fault can restart motion. Follow the plant's lockout and permit rules.
- Kinetix 300 (pp. 158–159): a digital input configured as "Fault Reset" in MotionView; an explicit message to Class 374 (hex) Instance 53, Attribute 0 (write 1, then 0); or cycling the enable command when fault reset is set to "On Disable".
- Kinetix 350: the reaction to each exception is set in Axis Properties, "Actions" category; a Shutdown action needs a "Shutdown Reset" (Table 57, p. 124). Some faults need two reset commands (p. 121).
When it is hardware
- E74 / F 10: with all power and motor leads removed, check continuity from the DC bus to U, V, W; if present and no stray wire fibers are found, send the drive for repair (
2097-UM001F p. 156;2097-UM002E p. 115). - Kinetix 350: Lxxx: reload firmware and restart, return the drive if it repeats; Pxxx: return the drive (p. 118). Fc 14: replace the drive (p. 117).
Before calling support, record the catalog number, the Fx.xx firmware shown on the display, the code and what the machine was doing. Need an engineer on site: request support. For replacement options see Kinetix 300/350 migration; newer drives: Kinetix 5300 fault codes.
Frequently asked questions
What is error E39 on a Kinetix 300?
E39 "Safe Torque Off while enabled" means the safety circuit opened while the drive was enabled or enabling; an
What does Sc05 mean on a Kinetix 350?
Sc05 is the "Safe torque off" start inhibit: the safety function has disabled the power structure (
What should I check for E09 or F 33 bus undervoltage?
Measure the AC input and look for line drop; the manuals suggest a UPS. On the Kinetix 350 the limit is a bus below 275V for a 460V system (
How do I clear a fault on a Kinetix 300?
Use a "Fault Reset" digital input, an explicit message to Class 374 (hex) Instance 53, Attribute 0, or cycle the enable with fault reset set to "On Disable" (
